The objectives and purposes
of the Wisconsin Main Street Alliance (WMSA) are to enhance the
visibility and success of the Main Street Programs in Wisconsin through
resources, development and education in collaboration with the State
Main Street Program and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
WMSA will strive to:
-
Create a
positive identity for all Main Street Communities
-
Educate
members on current issues and trends
-
Encourage
community revitalization
The Wisconsin Main Street
Program is based on the National
Trust for Historic Preservation philosophy, which advocates restoration
of the historic character of downtown while pursuing traditional
development strategies such as marketing, promotions, business
recruitment and retention, real estate development, market analysis, and
public improvements.
WSMA works cooperatively
with the Main Street program,
which is a comprehensive downtown economic revitalization program
promoting historic preservation of our downtown buildings. Downtowns are
the heart and soul of our towns and cities, and Main Street communities
work to create a working, growing and aesthetically pleasing business
center for the community. Main Street reinforces and rekindles economic
vitality and community values, and is committed to improve all aspects
of the downtown area, insuring that the downtown remains a source of
pride and representative of each town's unique character.

A downtown reflects how the
community sees itself --- a
critical factor in industrial business retention and recruitment
efforts. Downtowns provide a significant portion of the community's tax
base, and are an indispensable shopping and service center, as well as
the historic core of the city. They represent a vast amount of
public and private investment, the government center, a tourist draw,
and most importantly, they provide a sense of community and place.
